It is without a doubt that there are vehicles all over Pakistan that uses fake number plates and fail to pay token tax, depriving the government of tax revenues that run in hundreds and millions of rupees.

To curb this illegal practice, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched what may seem a seize and recovery campaign, and their efforts appear to be fruitful.

For instance, in a two-day recovery campaign, the KP Excise Department has successfully recovered millions of rupees for unpaid token tax and removed thousands of artificial number plates.

Excise & Taxation Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary Zafar Ali Shah said that he believes that vehicle registration law should be implemented in its letter and spirit and therefore, each vehicle in the province should be registered as per the law, using only those number plates which are issued by the provincial government.

The success of this two-day campaign can be summarized:

  • Rs 3 million worth token tax recovered
  • Appropriate action taken against 200 non-registered motorbikes
  • Immediate action taken against eight non-registered vehicles
  • 5000 artificial number plates recovered from various vehicles

The said operation is not limited to the general public only. Those government officials which are are not permitted to use green (government) number plates on their vehicles were reminded to use ordinary computerized number plates issued by KP’s Excise Department.

The cleanup operation is still underway in different parts of KPK where entry and exit points of every district are manned by Excise Department’s employees checking vehicles for any possible violation.
