In a bid to pace up the crackdown campaign against the non-duty paid vehicles, the Directorate of Customs, Intelligence and Investigation have recovered a couple of Land Cruisers from political figures in Karachi.

Ever since the government has imposed certain restrictions on the import of cars, the smuggling of vehicles has gradually increased in the country. In this connection, the Director of Customs, Intelligence and Investigation Karachi Irfan Javed has strictly directed all the staff to ramp up the vigilance on the non-duty paid vehicles. The department seized a 2011 registered BF-5889 V8 Land Cruiser which is owned by the former home minister of Sindh Sohail Anwar Siyal. The vehicle was intercepted by ASO Irshad Shah along with his team. At this time, the vehicle was being driven by the driver of Sohail Anwar Siyal and his gunman was also present on the occasion. The statement of both of them was recorded which revealed that it belonged to Anwar Siyal. Note here that the number of the vehicle was tampered.

The second bulletproof Land Cruiser was recovered from Azam Autotronic DHA Phase-II. According to the sources, the political figures of several political parties are using luxury vehicles with tampered numbers. A number of vehicles in the country were using one same set of documents to escape from the authorities. It is pertinent to mention here that the authorities are only seizing these vehicles without any action being taken against their owners. The law enforcement and anti-smuggling agencies are reluctant in taking legal action against the vehicle owners. Also, no investigation process has been carried out regarding how these non-paid duty vehicles entered into the country. The government should investigate and not allow any more such vehicles from entering into the country through any illegal means.

The restrictions on import of vehicles are imposed to boost up the local auto industry and minimize the impact of imbalance in the export and import on the economy of the country. However, on the other end, the consumers demand the lift of strict restrictions on the import of vehicles. The locally produced vehicles do not offer the quality and features offered by imported vehicles. Either the government should enforce the high standard production of vehicles in the country or lift the restrictions on import of vehicles to facilitate the consumers.
