Hambach is the place where the Smart brand’s all-electric cars are currently being produced. Mercedes Benz production chief Markus Schaefer said in a statement recently that the Smart plan in Hambach is set to become a part of the company’s global compact car production network. The main plant of the network is located in Rastatt, Germany. The annual production of Daimler’s plant in Hambach, France was more than 80,000 cars divided between Smart’s electric vehicles and their combustion-engine variants.

Mercedes has a very effective plan in place for its electric cars in the future. The company is set to use its vehicle underpinnings which will allow the company to mass produce the electric cars without the need for a new production line. The production lines that are currently being used for the production of the gasoline, hybrid and diesel engine cars will be able to produce the automaker’s electric cars. This strategy will be very helpful for Mercedes in case the demand for its electric vehicle spikes and the need for scaling up the production of the electric cars arises.

Mercedes Benz produced about 620,000 vehicles including its A-class, B-class, and GLA models last year. The production of these vehicles was distributed between plants in Rastatt, Kecskemet, Beijing, and Aguascalientes. In comparison, the electric vehicle giant Tesla only delivered a total of 101,312 vehicles last year.

The concept of this electric vehicles was showcased back in September 2017. The “Concept EQA” is an electric car that is capable of driving 250 miles at full battery charge and doesn’t necessarily need to be plugged-in in order recharge.Generation EQ, 2016

Apart from the production-ready version of the Concept EQA, Mercedes is also getting ready to produce the EQC, the fully-electric sports car which is set to be unveiled in Bremen next year. The EQC is going to use the production underpinnings of the GLC which is currently the best-selling sports vehicle of Mercedes.
