2018 Audi A8 to Become First Production Autonomous Car

It is a bold statement from the German luxury automaker but Audi is aiming to make its 2018 Audi A8 world’s first fully functioning production autonomous car. The new flagship replacement of the current A8 will be put up on sale at the end of 2017.

According to reports, Audi has further worked on its current Traffic Jam Assist technology which is already available in the current Audi A4 and the Audi Q7. But the upgrade is aimed to taking away almost all of the driving duties from the car’s pilot. The report also suggests that the 2018 A8 will be able to operate by itself in the congested traffic up to speeds of 60 km/h. Up until that speed, the car will not be needing any sort of driver assistance for normal driving operations. The technology will also let the new A8 park itself.

Technically, it is still considered as semi-autonomous since the car cannot drive on its own at highway speeds but still it is quite brave of Audi to make the system available in its flagship vehicle as a standard option. And the fact that Audi is going to take full liability for any driving incidents happening due to their self-driving feature only makes it sound even more impressive.

The technology is later supposed to be available in 2019 Audi A7, next gen A6, and eventually the new Audi Q8 SUV.
